the challenge

When building resources for trans, Two-Spirit, and non-binary parents to navigate baby feeding, TransCare BC had to build learning materials that are accessible and aligned with pediatric standards of care.

The images for these baby feeding resources had to exist in the space between lifestyle and medical illustration. While the images had to be representative of trans, Two-Spirit, and non-binary folks, the focus of the illustrations had to be on the different ways of feeding a baby. Needless to say, I had to learn a lot about the right way to hold a baby when feeding them!

the strategy

Working with the great folks at Hot Neon Learning, I developed a series of images to complement TransCare BC’s  illustration system.

When drawing people, I approach my subjects thinking of dignity first. I look at these characters the way I would look at a friend: noticing the unique quirks in their bodies and the way their personalities shine through their appearances. My favorite thing about these illustrations is that I got to be inspired by everyday folks and reimagine these tender moments at home with their little ones.
