the challenge

The Canadian Labour Congress needed to refresh their materials that showcase the powerful history of the labour movement in Canada. Having opted for a mix of motion graphics and archival photography in the past, they wanted to kick off their anual conference with fresh visuals.

the strategy

Working with The Animation Co-Op, we decided to produce six videos (three episodes in English and French) to reflect the vibrant history of the Labour Movement in Canada.

In my role as art director, I was inspired by the 1940s-1950s animation studio UPA and their modern art approach to cartooning. This style captured audiences with its signature minimalist charm.  Our hand-drawn line approach was an effective storytelling tool that the animation team used to represent the multiple struggles and victories of workers in Canada.
