the challenge
Trans and Non-Binary tudents at UBC needed a guide that helped make their everyday life on campus more accessible.
Darcy Bardeen and Britt Runeckles from the UBC Office of Equity and Inclusion wanted to create a tool that helped trans, non-binary, and gender diverse students navigate the systems and services at UBC. The guide had to be accessible for students regardless of their gender journeys.
the strategy
As I am not part of the trans and non-binary community, I leaned into the leadership of Darcy Bardeen and Britt Runeckles from the UBC Office of Equity and Inclusion. They wrote this guide along with Hélène Frohard-Dourlent and many trans and non-binary students who provided invaluable feedback and knowledge from their lived experiences.
Working together, our team was inspired by zines, which are very popular and common in LGBTQ+ circles. We wanted to create an official university document that felt and worked like a zine: loose, hand-drawn illustrations, and writing sourced from community.
We chose a subtle and pastel nod to the colours of the Trans flag and made sure to illustrate a wide range of gender expressions and bodies.
