the challenge
According to data from Anxiety Canada, the percentage of youth experiencing anxiety in 2021 doubled as a result of the COVID pandemic. Anxiety Canada set out to create a way for teenagers to feel more comfortable reaching out and talking about anxiety. The brilliant folks at Point Blank Creative knew that approaching this topic with a generic PSA wouldn’t be effective, so they developed a short cartoon series that has heart, humour, and sincerity.
Animation is an ideal tool for discussing difficult topics that can be upsetting, especially for teenagers.
the strategy
For this project, I worked closely with writers and art directors at PBC to create storyboards and develop all designs and backgrounds. I was also responsible for rigging the characters with RubberHose, character and effects animation, as well as compositing all the elements together in the end.
My favorite part of this project was designing every element to make sure it fit into the world of Chris Crust. I was very inspired by 90’s cartoons like Rocko’s Modern Life and Rocket Power. I wanted to refresh the traditional grunge janky aesthetic to create a world where a slice of pizza can be an anxious teen boy.
